Eight nonprofit CRM alternatives to evaluate as Kindful is retired

Kindful is going away: 8 alternatives to evaluate before you migrate

Quick answer: Kindful is being retired. Bloomerang acquired it in 2021, the standalone product is no longer getting new features, and organizations are being migrated into Bloomerang CRM. The eight alternatives worth evaluating before you accept that default are DonorDock, Bloomerang, Little Green Light, Neon CRM, DonorPerfect, Keela, Givebutter, and Virtuous. The migration path to Bloomerang is real and supported, but it is a choice, not an obligation, and a few things do not survive the move.

If you are on Kindful right now, you did not go looking for this. Your CRM worked, and then a decision was made somewhere above you, and now there is a project on your plate that you did not ask for.

Here is the useful reframe: you are getting a free evaluation. Most organizations never seriously re-examine their donor database, because switching is painful enough that inertia usually wins. You are switching either way. The only question is whether you switch to the platform that happens to be next in line, or to the one that actually fits how you work now.

What is actually happening with Kindful

Bloomerang acquired Kindful in 2021. The standalone Kindful product is in active sunset, with no new feature development, and organizations are being moved onto Bloomerang CRM.

A few specifics worth knowing before you plan anything:

  • Reports do not transfer. Any custom reporting you built in Kindful will need to be rebuilt.
  • Registration forms do not transfer.
  • The crowdfunding module stops working after the migration.
  • Kindful Fundraising survives as a sub-module inside Bloomerang CRM, so donation pages and text-to-donate carry over.

People often stay on the default path because switching sounds like more work. If your reports and forms have to be rebuilt regardless, a meaningful chunk of that "more work" is happening either way.

Verify the current specifics with Bloomerang directly, since sunset timelines and migration details do change.

What Kindful teams tend to want next

Kindful was well liked for a particular set of reasons:

  • It was approachable. People who were not database people could use it.
  • It integrated widely, especially with the fundraising and payment tools organizations already ran.
  • It was priced for growing organizations, not enterprises.
  • Online giving was built in, not bolted on.

Any replacement that loses two of those four will feel like a downgrade no matter what its feature list says.

The eight alternatives

#1 DonorDock

Best if you want approachable and all-in-one, without the record-count math

DonorDock is the closest thing on this list to "what Kindful was trying to be". One Plan, $500 a month for everything. Unlimited contact records. CRM, email marketing, online giving, text messaging, and automations all included, with nothing behind a higher tier.

For a Kindful team, three things stick out. Ease of use comes first: at 9.6 on G2, with 9.5 for setup, DonorDock is well known for its user-friendliness. Online giving is native rather than a separate module. And unlimited contacts means growing your list never triggers a pricing conversation, which is a real departure from most of this category.

Migration is white-glove and includes a dedicated specialist for 90 days to train and help set up the platform for you.

Where it is not the fit: the plan includes 5 users, with more as add-ons. If you have a large team (20+) on a small database (less than 2,000 contacts), Bloomerang or Little Green Light will be cheaper.

#2 Bloomerang

The default path, and a legitimate option

Bloomerang is where you land if you do nothing. It is a well-regarded platform with strong retention analytics and unlimited users on every plan, which is genuinely valuable for bigger teams.

Published pricing starts at $242 per month billed annually for The Giving Platform and $125 per month for Bloomerang CRM, with fundraising and volunteer management sold as separate products. Pricing is based on your record count.

The advantage of the default path is it is supported, it is documented, and your account team already knows you.

Where it is not the fit: if you liked Kindful because it was one approachable thing, note that Bloomerang's product line is modular, and text messaging is not built in. Also, if you were happy with Kindful's crowdfunding, that module does not survive the move.

#3 Little Green Light

Best if the budget got tighter

Fully public pricing: $45 per month up to 2,500 constituents, rising to $135 per month at 50,000, unlimited users, no platform fee beyond your processor's, no contracts, no setup fees.

Where it is not the fit: no built-in email marketing, no texting, no automation, outdated UI. You will run LGL plus an email tool. For Kindful teams used to having giving and communications in one place, that is a step back in consolidation even as it saves money.

#4 Neon CRM

Best if events drive your calendar

Neon's suite ties CRM, events, memberships, and payments together, and does that well. Neon's edge is member self-service portals and built-in event registration.

Model the whole cost. Neon adds percentages for events and memberships on top of the subscription, plus processing. Their public pricing is difficult to read, so insist on a quote against your real volumes.

Where it is not the fit: no events, no member portals, no reason.

#5 DonorPerfect

Best if you want more reporting depth than Kindful had

Core starts at $99 per month, with Plus and Pro quoted (actual cost is often much higher). The reporting is deeper than Kindful's by a wide margin.

Where it is not the fit: this is the opposite of Kindful's approachability. Reporting is formula and query-driven, and Moves Management, QuickBooks, and crowdfunding sit on Plus or higher. Teams that valued Kindful for being easy often find this a hard adjustment.

#6 Keela

Best for Canadian and cross-border organizations

Native CRA receipting and bilingual support, in an all-in-one shape that will feel familiar to Kindful teams.

Where it is not the fit: if you are US-only, its main advantage does not apply. Recently the company has gone quiet with little updates to the platform.

#7 Givebutter

Best for campaigns and events

Fast to launch, strong on peer-to-peer and events, free to start with a 3% platform fee model.

Where it is not the fit: the CRM underneath is much lighter. If you are managing year-round donor relationships rather than campaign to campaign, you will feel the ceiling fast.

#8 Virtuous

Best if you are ready to change how you fundraise

Virtuous comes with a methodology attached. Organizations that adopt responsive fundraising fully tend to do well with it.

Where it is not the fit: higher price point and a real implementation commitment, which is a lot to take on in the same year as a forced migration.

A migration checklist, whichever way you go

You are moving regardless. Make the move count.

  1. Export everything. Contacts, gift history, custom fields, notes, and a copy of every report definition you care about.
  2. Screenshot your forms. Registration forms do not carry over. If you want to rebuild them faithfully, capture them while they still exist.
  3. List your integrations. Kindful integrated widely. Write down every tool that touches it and confirm the replacement supports each one.
  4. Rebuild reports deliberately, not identically. You are rebuilding anyway. Ask which reports anyone actually read last year, and skip the rest.
  5. Ask every vendor the same three questions. Who does the migration, how long does it take, and what does it cost?
  6. Give yourself a real evaluation window. Two or three demos while you have leverage is a better use of a week than a year of regret.

Where DonorDock fits

DonorDock is built for growing nonprofits that want everything in one place without paying more as their donor list grows. For Kindful teams specifically, it keeps the things people liked about Kindful, approachable interface and native online giving, and adds what Kindful never had: built-in texting, automations, and pricing that does not move when you succeed.

If you are facing a migration you did not choose, we will do the heavy lifting. White-glove migration, typically under a week, no contracts, and a 90-day money-back guarantee, so a forced move does not have to become a year-long commitment to the wrong system.

Trusted by 7,600+ users, with $6B+ in gifts tracked since 2017.

What happens to my data when Kindful migrates to Bloomerang?

Contact and gift data moves, but several things do not. Custom reports do not transfer, registration forms do not transfer, and the crowdfunding module stops working after migration. The Kindful Fundraising module survives as a sub-module inside Bloomerang CRM, so donation pages and text-to-donate carry over. Export your data and capture your form layouts before you migrate.

Do I have to move to Bloomerang?

No. Migrating to Bloomerang is the default path, not a requirement. Because reports and forms have to be rebuilt either way, the extra effort of evaluating other platforms is smaller than it first appears. It is a reasonable moment to compare options like DonorDock, Little Green Light, Neon CRM, and Keela before committing.

What is the closest alternative to Kindful?

For teams who valued Kindful for being approachable, all-in-one, and priced for growing organizations, DonorDock is the closest match, with native online giving, built-in email and texting, unlimited contact records, and 9.6 ease of use on G2. Keela is a close comparison for Canadian organizations.

How long does it take to switch nonprofit CRMs?

DonorDock takes on average less than 60 days. Most other nonprofit CRM migrations take well over 90 days, depending on data complexity, team size, and historical records being imported. A typical migration includes data cleanup, field mapping and import, staff training, and a parallel-use transition period. Purpose-built nonprofit CRMs usually provide migration support and import templates.
